INDICATIONS: The amount of breast development in an adult female varies considerably. Some women simply never develop a large amount of breast tissue. Others note that their breast tissue becomes noticeably less in amount following pregnancies. The majority of women seeking this surgery seek only to have normal size breasts that relate to their body proportions and they are not seeking to be exceptionally buxom. Breast implants makes small breasts larger. Breasts made larger by implants have the same tendency to droop and sag as the same size breasts without implants.

BEFORE SURGERY: Prior to surgery a detail medical history is taken including information about number of pregnancies, history of breast diseases, breast-feeding and family history for breast cancer. A careful examination is conducted. The physician and patient discuss the type and implant size, anesthesia type, possible risks and complications as well as the incision site. Pre-operative instructions may include the elimination of certain drugs and smoking habits.

BREAST AUGMENTATION PROCEDURE: The operation consists of developing a pocket behind the chest muscle or the breast tissue. The implant pushes the breasts forward, but it is not actually within the breast tissue. The most common way to gain access to the area behind the breast is through an incision approximately one inch around areola (ring around the nipple), the crease under the breast, crease in the axilla (armpit) or the umbilicus (belly Button). The size of the implant to be used is determined by the amount of the existing breast tissue, by your height, weight and the final size desired.

PROCEDURE TIME: Between 45 minute to an hour.

ANESTHEISA: General anesthesia in most circumstances.

AFTER SURGERY: You will be wearing the stretch bras without an underwire for the first couple of weeks. You may not raise the arm above the shoulders or avoid excessive arm movements in the first five days. You may shower two days after surgery. Most of the discomfort will be over after 3 or 4 days. You should not participate in any sports such as jogging, swimming, bowling, tennis, etc. for about three to four weeks.

RISK & COMPLICATIONS: Complications connected with the surgical procedure are rare: however there are inherent risks connected with every surgical procedure. You will have a scar, which may take up to six months to disappear. Each person heals differently and neither the physician nor the patient can control the patient's healing. As with any operation there is a risk of infection which may result in removal of implant for a short time. A decrease or increase in nipple sensation may temporarily occur and rarely the change may be permanent. The scar around the breast implant (capsule) may contract and tighten which gives the hard feeling to the implant (capsular contracture). The inflatable saline implants may leak.
