INDICATIONS: Labioplasty, also known as labia reduction, vaginal lip reduction, or labia rejuvenation, is a procedure to decrease the size and improve the appearance of enlarged, hypertrophic or asymmetrical labia minora. The enlarged labia may cause some women to experience discomfort with pinching or pulling during certain activities, or with some clothing.

Labioplasty can greatly enhance the cosmetic appearance of the outer vagina giving many women greater confidence and self esteem. Women who are unhappy or embarrassed with the way their labia look. Often this affects sexual relationships and self esteem. Some women just want to look as beautiful as they can for themselves and their partner.

BEFORE SURGERY: Prior to surgery a detail medical history is taken including information about number of pregnancies, history of delivery method. A careful examination is conducted. The physician and patient discuss procedure, anesthesia type, possible risks and complications as well as the incision site. Pre-operative instructions may include the elimination of certain drugs and smoking habits.

PROCEDURE: The procedure consists of making fine incisions on the sides of each labia (labia minora or inner lips) placed within natural folds and creases.  The excess tissue is removed and the incision site is closed using absorbable sutures.

PROCEDURE TIME: Between 45 minute to an hour.

ANESTHEISA: General anesthesia or intravenous sedation is performed in most circumstances.

AFTER SURGERY: You will have discomfort at the surgical site for the first few days which will then decrease. All patients are sent home with prescriptions for pain medication and antibiotics. Full healing takes approximately six weeks. All sutures used are absorbable and therefore do not need to be removed. You may shower two days after surgery. Most of the discomfort will be over after 3 or 4 days. You should not participate in any sports such as jogging, swimming, bowling, tennis, etc. for about three to four weeks.

RISK & COMPLICATIONS: Complications connected with the surgical procedure are rare: however there are inherent risks connected with every surgical procedure. You will have a scar, which may take few weeks to disappear. Each person heals differently and neither the physician nor the patient can control the patient's healing. As with any operation there is a risk of infection. The most common risks of surgery may include bleeding, infection, and scarring, however these are very unusual.

FEMALE GENITAL ANATOMY: Our procedures are designed to address the cosmetic concerns involving the four major areas that comprise a woman's external genitals:

  1. Labia Minora: The inner lips can be made smaller, irregular shape or contour improved, and differences in size of the two lips corrected. Our techniques preserve natural pigmentation of the labia edges, with virtually no visible scarring.
  2. Clitoral Hood: Excess skin, sagging and extra folds can be removed to contour the Clitoral Hood achieving a more normal appearance, with virtually no visible scars.
  3. Labia Majora: The outer lips can be made less puffy by liposuction or surgical excision. Drooping or sagging is corrected by skin removal, or plumped by fat injection.
  4. Mons Pubis: The Mons Pubis often sags with age or weight gain. It can be elevated and reduced in height and width. The resulting scars are usually hidden within the pubic hair. A bulging, prominent mons can be made flatter using liposuction.

Where Is The Labioplasty Surgery Performed?

When Can I Return To Work Post Labioplasty Surgery?

Most patients return to work in two to four days after surgery with restrictions in activities. Restrictions include no heavy lifting, no sports or exercising for about 4 weeks.

When Can I Resume Sexual Activity Post Labioplasty Surgery?

Sexual activity usual can resume six to eight weeks after the Labioplasty Surgical procedure.

Will Labioplasty Surgery Result In Decrease In Sensation?

For the vast majority of women the clitoris is the structure associated with sensory pleasure, not the labia. As such you should not notice any loss of pleasurable sensation after surgery.

Will Labioplasty Alter The Skin Surrounding My Clitoris?

Usually this area is not altered during the surgery. Some women do have excessive skin in this area and it can be trimmed to give a more pleasing and natural appearance at the time of surgery. This can be discussed at the time of consultation.

Will My Sexual Partner Notice A Difference After My Labioplasty Surgery?

If the labia were interfering with intercourse, both of you will notice an improvement. Visually, your partner should notice that your labia are now smaller and better proportioned.
